SAMAJAM PLAY DEPICTS STORY OF TALENT AND JEALOUSY

THE Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam (BKS) will stage an English play based on two popular theatre shows next month.
Entitled Mozart and Salieri, it is based on English dramatist Peter Shaffer's 1979 stage play Amadeus and the 18th century work Malenkie Tragedii or the Little Tragedies, penned by Russian author Alexander Pushkin.
It tells the story of talent, jealousy and a subsequent feud and will be presented as a typical play from the candle theatre era.
Rehearsals are now in full swing and more than 40 actors will take the stage for the event.
It will be staged from 8pm on February 5 at the BKS Diamond Jubilee Hall in Segaiya and forms part of the Samajam's cultural, charitable and community activities.
"We are proud to present this English drama at our Diamond Jubilee Hall in aid of the Samajam local charity activities to a multi-national audience as a dinner theatre," said president G K Nair.
The play's director Mohan Raj said the play would rely heavily on the elements of candle theatre that was a popular form of 18th century drama.
"Through this theatrical extravaganza, the Samajam wishes to introduce the concept of candle theatre which was a characteristic of the English and European dramas till the middle of 20th century," he said.
More than 500 people are expected to attend the event and donor passes are priced at BD10 each.
Tables for 10 will cost BD100. All proceeds will go towards the Samajam's charity activities.
