PLAYERS and officials have begun arriving in the Kingdom ahead of the eagerly awaited Bahrain International Challenge badminton tournament being organised by the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam (BKS) in association with the Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation.
The event will be held from Tuesday to Saturday at the BKS Diamond Jubilee Hall and entrance is free on all days of competition.
The tournament carries a cash prize of $15,000 and world ranking points will be at stake. More than 175 players and officials from 30 countries are taking part in the event including top ranked players like Prmyslaw Wacha, Eric Pang, Judith Meulendijks, Sanave Thomas, Rupesh Kumar, Nicole Grether and Charmaine Reid.
Matches will start at 4 pm. The quarter-finals will be played on Friday morning and the semi-finals on the same evening. Finals will start on Saturday at 6pm.
Sudhakar Vemuri of India will be the Badminton Asia Confederation appointed referee. BKS Indoor Games secretary and convener of the organising committee Ashley George welcomed Vemuri on his arrival yesterday.
The Iranian team also arrived yesterday along with deputy referee for the tournament Zahra Haghnejad.
Iraq, Jordan and Syria were the other teams to arrive yesterday.
The major sponsors for this event are Almarai and Chevron. Main sponsor is Mohammed Jalal & Sons and co-sponsors are IPS Trade Middle East, Ahmed Zayani & Sons, Dubai Horizon, R.P Construction, Orange Graphics, Berger Paints and Maison Interiors.

ആറ് ഹ്രസ്വചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ ആദ്യ പ്രദര്ശനം
കേരളീയ സമാജം സിനിമ ക്ലബിന്റെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില് നിര്മിച്ച ആറ് ഹ്രസ്വചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ ആദ്യ പ്രദര്ശനം കഴിഞ്ഞ് 10ന് വൈകീട്ട് 3.30ന് നടന്നു. സംവിധായകന് ബ്ലെസിയായിരുന്നു ആദ്യ പ്രദര്ശനത്തിലെ മുഖ്യാതിഥി. എലോണ്, ഹാജ, സമാന്തരം, കാമിലാസ്, കഫീന്, പുനര്ജനി എന്നീ ചിത്രങ്ങളാണ് പ്രദര്ശിപ്പിച്ചത്. അബ്ദുല് ജലീല്, പ്രവീണ് നായര്, മനേക്ഷ് വി തോമസ്, ബാജി ഓടംവേലി, ഹരീഷ് മേനോന്, ജയേഷ് പിള്ള എന്നിവരാണ് സംവിധായകര്.

അംബാസഡര്ക്ക് മലയാളി സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ വിട
സര്വീസില് നിന്ന് വിരമിക്കുന്ന ഇന്ത്യന് അംബാസഡര് ഡോ ജോര്ജ് ജോസഫിന് മലയാളി സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ യാത്രാമൊഴി. കേരളീയ സമാജം ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില് നടന്ന യാത്രയപ്പ് ചടങ്ങില് പ്രശസ്ത സിനിമാ സംവിധായകന് ഹരിഹരനും സന്നിഹിതനായിരുന്നു. അറുപതോളം അസോയേഷന് ഭാവാഹികള് അംബാസഡറെ പൊന്നാടയണിയിച്ചു. സാധാരണക്കാരന്റെ അംബാസഡര് എന്നു പരക്കെ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ജോര്ജ് ജോസഫിന്റെ യാത്രയപ്പില് സമാജം ഹാള് തിങ്ങിനിറഞ്ഞു. ആയിരത്തോളം പേര് പങ്കെടുത്ത ചടങ്ങില് ഇന്ത്യന് എംബസി ഫസ്റ്റ് സെക്രട്ടറി എ അജയകുമാര്, ഐസിആര് എഫ് ചെയര്മാന് ജോണ് ഐപ്പ് സമാജം പ്രസിഡന്റ് പി വി രാധാകൃഷ്ണപിള്ള, ജനറല് സെക്രട്ടറി എന് കെ വീരമണി, ട്രഷര് കെ എസ് സജുകുമാര്, വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് അബുറഹിമാന് തുടങ്ങിയവര് പങ്കെടുത്തു.
New anthology by Bahrain-based poet
THE newest works of Bahrain-based Indian poet Zulfi Kutty will be released this weekend.
Her anthology Thirayadanga Samudrangal will be launched at a ceremony at the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam (BKS), Segaiya, at 8pm on Saturday.
Entry to the launch ceremony is open to all Malayalam poetry enthusiasts.
The announcements came at a Press conference yesterday at the BKS.
Present was BKS president P V Radhakrishna Pillai, general secretary N K Veeramani, treasurer Saju Kumar, entertainment secretary Saju Kudassanadu and Ms Kutty's huband Mohammed Kutty
